Paper Wasps

What do paper wasps look like?

European paper wasps (Polistes dominula) are slender, wasp-like insects with smooth bodies and a narrow “waist.” They measure about ⅝ to ¾ inch long, with long legs that dangle when they fly.

They have black bodies with yellow markings, and their orange-tinted antennae are one of the easiest ways to tell them apart from other wasps in Virginia.

How can I tell a European paper wasp from a yellow jacket?

Paper wasps have a slimmer body, longer legs, and orange antennae. Yellow jackets have stockier bodies and black antennae.

What do paper wasps eat?

Adult paper wasps feed mainly on nectar and other sugary liquids. They also hunt caterpillars and other soft-bodied insects to feed their developing larvae, making them a beneficial predator in gardens. However, their nesting habits can be a problem for homeowners.

Where do paper wasps build nests?

These wasps are known for their open, umbrella-shaped nests made of papery material, which they create by chewing wood fibers mixed with saliva. They often attach nests to sheltered spots such as:

  • Eaves, porch ceilings, and overhangs
  • Inside vents or light fixtures
  • Under deck railings
  • Within sheds, barns, or garages

Nests start small in spring when a single queen begins building, but they can hold many adult wasps by late summer.

Can paper wasps sting multiple times?

Yes, they can! Unlike honeybees, their stingers aren’t barbed, so they don’t get stuck in the skin. That means a single wasp can sting repeatedly, so it’s best to give their nests plenty of space.

Are paper wasps dangerous?

In most cases, people will only experience pain, redness, and swelling where they were stung, but for those with allergies, a wasp sting can trigger a severe and sometimes life-threatening reaction.

Are paper wasps aggressive?

Paper wasps are not naturally aggressive when away from their nest, but they can become defensive if there’s a threat to their colony. Accidental encounters are common because their nests are often near human activity, and their sting can be painful.

Can I remove a paper wasp nest myself?

You can cautiously remove very small or inactive nests, but active nests, especially in hard-to-reach or risky spots, should be handled by a pest control professional.
