Every June 6, World Pest Day shines a spotlight on an industry that works quietly but powerfully to keep communities safe. This year's global theme, "Defending Health Across Borders: The Global Power of Pest Management," makes the message clearer than ever: pest control is a public health necessity.

Public health officials consistently rank pest management among the top three contributors to the improved quality of life we enjoy today. From contaminated food supplies to disease-carrying insects, the threats are real, and they're active all summer long.
"Summer brings longer days and warmer weather, but it also brings increased pest activity and the health risks that come with it," said Charlie Church, Owner at Getem Services. "World Pest Day is our opportunity to remind people that pest control professionals play an essential role in protecting families. There's a lot that homeowners can do to stay ahead of pest problems, but knowing when to bring in a licensed professional makes all the difference."
In recognition of World Pest Day, Getem is partnering with the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) to highlight the pests that demand the most attention this summer, and the preventive steps every homeowner should take:
- Mosquitoes are the deadliest animals on Earth, spreading diseases including West Nile virus and dengue fever. Eliminate standing water in gutters, flowerpots, and yard debris to stop mosquito breeding at the source.
- Stinging insects like hornets, wasps, and yellowjackets send hundreds of thousands of Americans to the ER each year. Never attempt to remove nests yourself, as these insects can quickly become aggressive.
- Tick activity is concerning this year, with ER visits at their highest level since 2017. They can spread diseases like Lyme disease and alpha-gal syndrome. Keep grass trimmed, clear brush, and check yourself, children, and pets after time outdoors.
- Termites cause an estimated $6.8 billion in damage annually in the U.S., and it is rarely covered by homeowners' insurance. Annual professional inspections are the most cost-effective defense.
- Rodents spread more than 35 diseases through droppings, urine and saliva. Seal exterior gaps, reduce clutter and store food securely. If an infestation occurs, professional treatment is the best solution.
